Back to 1970s Christmas
The 1970s has often been called “The Me Decade.” Anti-war protests and the fight for equal rights continued while individuality and self-expression were brought to the forefront. Fashion moved into bell-bottom pants, earthy colors, leisure suits, and big hair. The Watergate scandal, oil crises, inflation, Three Mile Island nuclear incident, and tragedies such as the Kent State shooting rocked our nation.
Science and technology were revolutionized with DNA genome sequencing, the first MRI, and the launch of unmanned missions to space. The invention of email, game systems, modern computing, the Walkman, and the building of the World Trade Center and the Sears Tower forged this decade ahead. The Albemarle region saw Gates County’s Merchant’s Millpond State Park established in 1973. The Cupola House in Edenton became a National Historic Landmark in 1970 and the Meherrin Indian Tribe was incorporated in 1977.
Bob Marley, Aerosmith, Donna Summer, and disco music were trending in music. STAR WARS, Jaws, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, Bruce Lee movies, and the Rocky Horror Picture Show headlined your movie theaters. The Miami Dolphins went “all the way” by winning the Super Bowl in 1972 with an undefeated record and toys like Hot Wheels, Atari, Speak & Spell, and Connect Four were in all the toy catalogs.
