History for Lunch: Early Coastal North Carolina Quakers and Slavery

J. Timothy Allen, Ph.D., professor of humanities at Strayer University, will discuss the early North Carolina Quakers' attitudes toward slavery and how and why they progressed from slavery to manumission. 

Virginia and New England Quakers arrived in coastal North Carolina from the 1650s into the early 1700s. Surprisingly, many were enslavers who forced enslaved people to labor on Quaker farms in this colony.
