Volunteer Opportunities at the Museum

There are numerous areas within the museum where individuals can volunteer. Skill levels needed vary; some are minimal, and others are more in-depth. Among these are strong communication skills, public speaking, an interest in history, and a genuine enthusiasm for the subject. Knowledge of North Carolina and United States history is helpful but not necessary. Opportunities are available during the week and also on weekends.

EDUCATION

  • Docents: Docents may lead general and specialized museum tours for visiting schools and adult groups. Docents will also assist with many educational programs inside and outside the museum. Hands-on presentations, small-group programs, and other types of programming take place year-round at schools, churches, civic groups, and other organizations.   • Special Events: Volunteers can assist with special events periodically throughout the year. Duties may include assisting with creative activities, conducting surveys, and acting as food/beverage hosts or hostesses. Additionally, volunteers are needed to assist with preparing for special events before the program.
  • Staff Assistants: Staff assistants work closely with museum personnel in various departments, including the library, collections, administration, and education offices.

RECEPTION

  • Volunteers can assist the Public Information Specialists' greeting groups and visitors at the museum's reception desks.

COLLECTIONS

  • Research: Volunteers in research will assist the Curator in various activities. Opportunities will include research on specific artifacts or general research about historical trends or events.
  • Collections Care: Volunteers in Collections Care will assist the Curator in various endeavors related to the maintenance of collections.
